  1. Suspect named - but questions remain about Tumbler Ridge shootingspublished at 22:31 GMT 11 February

We've now got a lot more detail about how the shootings in western Canada unfolded, following a police news conference a short while earlier, during which the suspect was named as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar.

There are still some questions that remain, however.

We don't know the names of the eight people who were killed.

    • Those found dead in Tumbler Ridge Secondary School were an 39-year-old female educator, three female students, all aged 12, and two male students, aged 12 and 13
    • The victims in the nearby residence were a 39-year-old female and an 11-year-old boy. Police say they were the mother and step-brother of the suspect

Nor do we know what relationship - if any - the suspect had with those killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

    • The suspect dropped out of the school four years ago. When asked if the suspect faced bullying "because of the transition from male to female", McDonald says there was no suggestion of this

We know little about the guns found in the school.

    • Police say two firearms - a long gun and a modified handgun - were found. Police have not yet confirmed the role they played in the shooting, nor what model

We also don't know anything about the suspect's motive, or the nature of the injuries sustained by the 25 wounded.

"Mental health professionals will be present," it adds.

The committee has also set up a GoFundMe page in collaboration with the mayor and council to support the families affected by the shooting.

  4. Police name suspect and release details after Tumbler Ridge shootingspublished at 20:37 GMT 11 February

We just received a lot of information regarding the shootings in Tumbler Ridge yesterday. Here's what we learned from deputy commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Dwayne McDonald:

    • The suspect was named as Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, born a "biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female"
    • The updated death toll from the school stands at: one female educator, two male students and three female students
    • It was confirmed that the two people who had been shot in a nearby home were the suspect's mother and step-brother. The police were called to the home after they had been called to the school, by a female youth who is related to the suspect and victims
    • Police corrected earlier reports that a victim had died on their way to hospital
    • The suspect also died from what police believe was a self-inflicted wound
    • Two firearms were found at the school - one long gun and a modified handgun
    • Van Rootselaar dropped out of school four years ago. When asked if the suspect faced bullying "because of the transition from male to female", McDonald says there's no suggestion of this
    • Police had attended the suspect's family home on multiple occasions over several years, dealing with mental health concerns of the suspect. Some interactions concerned weapons
  5. McDonald says no information to suggest suspect bullied in schoolpublished at 20:30 GMT 11 February

We can bring you a bit more from the press conference with deputy commissioner Dwayne McDonald now.

A reporter asked McDonald if he could talk about "any information you have regarding Jesse experiencing bullying at the school [or] any sort of difficulty at the school because of the transition from male to female".

McDonald said he had no information to suggest this was the case, but Jesse Van Rootselaar dropped out of school around four years ago and wasn't attending school.

The deputy commissioner was then asked why police waited so long to confirm the identity of the suspect.

McDonald said this was because they needed to ensure their information was accurate. They also needed to locate the next of kin of the deceased suspect, he added.

That is the end of our coverage of this briefing, and we will bring you a recap shortly.

  6. More details issued about the victimspublished at 20:23 GMT 11 February

A little more detail on the victims now, which is different to some of the information we heard earlier in the press conference.

There were two people, McDonald says, that were airlifted to hospital. He gives no update on their condition.

A police official then gives an update on the deceased. In the school they are:

    • A 39-year-old female educator
    • Three female students, all aged 12
    • Two male students, one aged 12 and the other 13

The deceased in the residence are:

    • One 39-year-old female, the mother of the suspect
    • An 11-year-old boy, the step-brother of the suspect
  7. Most victims born in 2012 and 2013, say policepublished at 20:16 GMT 11 February

McDonald says there is no information at this point to suggest that any of the victims in the school were specifically targeted.

He says that police are still notifying families of the victims. Most of the victims were "quite young", he continues, and most were born in 2012 and 2013.

The majority of those who were injured did not sustain gunshot wounds, he says, but will not speculate on further details.

  8. Incident at the residence occurred first, says officerpublished at 20:13 GMT 11 February

Giving more details about the shooting of the suspect's family members at a local residence, McDonald says the police were called to this scene after they were called to the school.

The police were called by a young female at around 13:47 local time, McDonald says.

Officers were called because a young female at the home went to her neighbours. This female was a family member of the victims at the home and the suspect, he explains.

The incident at the home occurred first, then the suspect went to the school, he tells the press.

  9. Police 'don't have an idea yet' of motivepublished at 20:08 GMT 11 February

McDonald says the police "don't have an idea yet" as to what the suspect's motive was, and that it's something investigators are "passionately pursuing".

The officer is asked where in the school the victims were killed. He says one victim was found dead in the stairwell, and the rest were located in the school's library.

Asked to comment on the environment of the suspect's family home, McDonald says he cannot comment at this point.

  10. Suspect 'did not have any firearms registered', says deputy commissionerpublished at 19:59 GMT 11 February

McDonald is asked when police were last in contact with the suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar.

He says it was some time last year, and confirms that they were not in contact with Van Rootselaar in the last few days.

Asked if the suspect had a gun licence, the deputy commissioner says: "I believe she had a license which had expired in 2024, she did not have any firearms registered to her".

  11. Rootselaar identified as female 'socially and publicly'published at 19:57 GMT 11 February

McDonald says police have identified the suspect as "they chose to be identified".

"I can say that Jesse was born as a biological male who approximately six years ago began to transition to female", he says.

Van Rootselaar "identified as female, both socially and publicly", he adds.

  12. Police attended suspect's family home multiple timespublished at 19:55 GMT 11 February

McDonald gives some more detail about police visits to the suspect's family home.

He says police had attended the residence on multiple occasions over the past several years, dealing with mental health concerns of the suspect.

The suspect was apprehended on different occasions for assessment and follow-up under the Mental Health Act, he tells the press.

Asked if any of the interactions the suspect had with police had anything to do with weapons, McDonald replies "yes".

The deputy commissioner says police have attended the residence in the past, approximately two years ago, where firearms were seized under the criminal code. He adds that the lawful owner of those firearms petitioned for them to be returned, and they were.

  13. Two people found dead at local residence related to suspectpublished at 19:53 GMT 11 February

McDonald confirms that the two people found dead at a local residence were related to the suspect.

The adult female victim is Van Rootselaar's mother, the male youth is Van Rootselaar's step-brother, he says.

  14. Suspect identified as female, say policepublished at 19:50 GMT 11 February

McDonald is asked to expand with more information on the suspect.

He says the 18-year-old suspect was "born as a biological male, who.... approximately six years ago began to transition to female, and identified as female".

There is a history of police attendance at the suspect's family residence, he says, with some calls related to mental health issues.

  15. Currently no outstanding suspects, says deputy commissionerpublished at 19:48 GMT 11 February

On the speculation around the relationship between the shooter and the victims, McDonald says police will not publicly confirm any specifics at this time.

He says additional resources have been deployed to the area, and there are currently no other outstanding suspects as they believe the suspect acted alone.

  16. Victims include students and adult female educatorpublished at 19:47 GMT 11 February

McDonald says he wants to correct some information that was shared yesterday, clarifying that "nine people in total are deceased as a result of this incident".

Initially it was believed that one of the females with significant injuries had died, but police have since confirmed that she's alive.

He says the deceased victims include an adult female educator, three female students and two male students between the ages of 13 and 17.

He adds that the two additional victims, an adult female and a male youth, were located deceased in a local residence.

  17. Two firearms recovered on scenepublished at 19:43 GMT 11 February

McDonald says two firearms - a long gun and a modified handgun - were found on the scene. They are yet to determine the role these played in the shootings.

Multiple victims were located throughout the school, he says and more than 100 students and faculty were evacuated once it was deemed safe, he adds.

Those with potential injuries were transported to triage. Two victims were taken to hospital by air ambulance, he adds.
